Types of Swimming Pools and Their Features — A Fox Pools Engineering Guide
Before choosing a pool shape, understand the system behind it. This guide breaks down every pool type built in Egypt — skimmer, overflow, concrete, liner, fibreglass, infinity and children’s pools — from 30+ years of site experience, with a straight comparison of durability, cost and maintenance.
Skimmer pools — the most common system in Egypt
In a skimmer pool the water sits roughly 15–20 cm below the coping. Water is drawn through skimmer boxes set into the wall at surface level, passes through the filter and pump, and returns through inlets. The engineering logic is simple: the surface layer carries most of the leaves, oils and dust, so pulling it off the top keeps water clean at the lowest cost.
Benefits: lower build cost, no balance tank, a smaller plant room, and lower water and energy consumption because the circulated volume is smaller.
When to choose it: Choose skimmer when cost and running economy lead, when plant-room space is tight, or for standard family villa pools.

Overflow pools — deck-level water and a resort look
In an overflow (deck-level) pool the water surface is flush with the deck. Water spills continuously into a perimeter grating channel and down to a balance tank, from which the pump draws it through the filter and back into the pool floor. The result is a mirror-flat surface and cleaner water, since the surface layer is renewed constantly.
The trade-off: a correctly sized balance tank, a larger plant room, higher-flow pumps, and noticeably higher build and running costs. Execution tolerance is tight — a few millimetres of level error in the channel ruins the effect.
When to choose it: Choose overflow when architectural appearance matters most, for hotels, clubs and high-load projects, or with modern terrace and garden design.

Concrete (reinforced) pools
A reinforced concrete shell is the most durable option: calculated steel and mix design resisting internal water pressure and external soil and groundwater pressure, followed by multi-layer waterproofing and a ceramic, mosaic or stone finish.
Its key advantage is total design freedom — any shape, depth, internal steps, spa benches or integrated waterfalls. Service life exceeds 25 years with correct maintenance, and finishes can be renewed later without demolishing the structure.
When to choose it: Choose concrete for non-standard shapes, special depths, or a long-life asset — the default for most Egyptian villas.

Liner pools
A liner is a reinforced PVC membrane, usually 0.75–1.5 mm, laid inside a steel, panel or concrete structure and welded on site. Installation is faster than traditional concrete, initial cost is lower, and the surface is smooth and comfortable.
The downside: the liner is a consumable. Expect replacement every 8–12 years depending on membrane quality, water chemistry and UV exposure, and it is more vulnerable to punctures.
When to choose it: Choose a liner when speed and initial budget dominate, or when renovating an existing shell.

Fibreglass pools
A factory-moulded fibreglass shell is delivered and set into a prepared excavation. Installation can take days rather than weeks, and the non-porous surface reduces algae and chemical consumption.
Limits are clear: fixed factory shapes and sizes, a transport-driven maximum dimension, almost no scope for later modification, and the site must allow crane access.
When to choose it: Choose fibreglass for small and mid-size gardens where speed and low maintenance beat design freedom.

Infinity (vanishing-edge) pools
An infinity pool extends the overflow principle: one or more edges are built lower so water sheets over into a hidden catch basin, making the surface appear to merge with the sea, garden or horizon beyond.
It requires careful structural design because the weir wall is often free-standing, very tight level control, and an extra pump for the edge circuit. It is the most expensive type and the highest-impact visually.
When to choose it: Choose infinity on sloping sites or open views: North Coast, Ain Sokhna, and villas overlooking green space.

Children’s pools
A children’s pool is built to a safe depth, typically 30–60 cm, ideally on its own filtration circuit or at minimum separated by a physical barrier with non-slip surrounds.
Engineering-wise it needs a faster turnover rate than the main pool because the volume is small and contamination per litre is higher, plus a gentle floor gradient and optional lighting and heating to extend the season.
When to choose it: Add a children’s pool with under-10s at home, or in compounds and clubs where safety rules require it.

Pool Types FAQs
Which type of swimming pool is best?
There is no absolute winner. A reinforced concrete skimmer pool suits most Egyptian villas because it balances durability, design freedom and cost. Overflow and infinity pools win when architectural appearance is the priority and budget allows.
What is the cheapest type of swimming pool?
Pre-engineered liner pools have the lowest initial cost, followed by small fibreglass shells. Over a 20-year horizon concrete closes the gap, because liners need replacing every 8–12 years.
Which pool type is best for villas?
A reinforced concrete skimmer pool, usually 24–48 m², with internal steps and LED lighting. If the garden has a view or a level change, a single infinity edge adds significant value.
How long does each pool type last?
A well-waterproofed concrete shell exceeds 25 years, fibreglass runs 15–25 years, and a liner membrane needs replacement every 8–12 years while the structure remains. Pumps and filters typically last 7–12 years.
Skimmer vs overflow pool — what is the difference?
A skimmer pool draws water through wall-mounted skimmers with the surface below the coping. An overflow pool keeps water at deck level, spilling into a perimeter channel and balance tank. Overflow looks better and stays cleaner; skimmer is cheaper to build and run.
