Structural Behaviour in Egyptian Soil and Water Table
A pool is not only a vessel holding water in; it is a buried body resisting soil pressure from outside and uplift from below. Across the Delta, parts of old Cairo, and sites near canals or the sea, the water table can sit two metres down or less. The moment you drain the pool for service it becomes an empty boat in water, and that uplift easily exceeds the weight of an empty shell.
A reinforced concrete shell wins here on self-weight and on the ability to design a base slab and structural ring that resist uplift. A fibreglass shell is the lightest and the most exposed to flotation or distortion if backfill is done badly or dewatering is stopped too early. A galvanized panel-and-liner pool sits in between: also light, but bedded on a concrete base with compacted layered backfill, which makes it far more controllable.
Expansive clays that swell with moisture and shrink when dry impose uneven point stress. Reinforced concrete distributes that stress across a designed section; fibreglass translates it into gelcoat crazing over time, because the shell tolerates very little local bending.
Where Fibreglass Genuinely Wins
Speed
The shell arrives manufactured, so you are talking days after excavation instead of weeks of shell, waterproofing, and finishing. With a rental season or a hard handover date, that advantage is real, not marketing.
Non-porous surface
Gelcoat resists algae and biofilm adhesion, so chlorine demand and brushing are lower than on a porous finish. That matters most on pools left without weekly attention.
Lower site disruption
Far less wet trade and concrete work means less noise and dust — significant in compounds with strict site rules.
Consistent quality
The shell is produced under factory control, so it does not depend on site workmanship the way concrete and waterproofing do.
And where it loses: logistics first — the shell travels as one piece and needs a crane and an access route, which alone rules it out for many villas inside tight compounds. Then design limits: no custom depth, no free-form shape, no bespoke steps, no infinity edge. Finally repair — any crack or osmotic blister needs laminate work and a colour match that rarely comes out right.
North Coast and Sokhna versus Cairo
On the North Coast and in Ain Sokhna the soil is sandy, the water table is shallow, use is intensely seasonal, and the air is salt-laden. Salinity attacks unprotected fixings and metals, and seasonal operation means the pool sits empty or near-empty for months — the single most dangerous condition for any light shell because of uplift. There we favour an engineered concrete shell with perimeter drainage, or a galvanized panel-and-liner pool where speed leads.
In New Cairo, the Fifth Settlement, Sheikh Zayed, and 6th of October the soil is sandy-clay, the water table is generally deeper, and use is year-round. The binding constraint there is not buoyancy but site access, compound rules, and the appetite for a bespoke architectural shape — all of which point toward concrete.

Since 1993, and across more than 500 delivered projects in Egypt, we have settled on reinforced concrete as the default for villas and long-life projects, with galvanized panel-and-liner as the fast, controllable option when programme is the binding constraint. The reason is not taste: concrete is the only one of the three you can repair locally and refinish after fifteen years without touching the structure.
On warranty we give 10 years on the concrete shell, 5 years on the galvanized steel structure, 1 year on the liner as a consumable, and 2 years on installed equipment. Those numbers are the clearest statement of our engineering view of each system.

Frequently Asked Questions
Concrete or fibreglass — which is better in Egypt?
There is no single answer. Fibreglass installs far faster and its non-porous gelcoat surface consumes fewer chemicals, but shape and size are fixed at the factory and transport and craning into many compound plots is a real constraint. Concrete gives full freedom of shape and depth with a longer structural life, but takes longer and depends on disciplined waterproofing.
Is fibreglass affected by a high water table?
Yes, and it is the main risk in Egypt. A fibreglass shell is light; with a high water table, draining the pool or uncontrolled dewatering can float the shell out of position or distort the walls. Correct installation requires a concrete base slab, free-draining backfill, and a dewatering system around the shell.
Which lasts longest: concrete, liner, or fibreglass?
A properly waterproofed concrete shell exceeds 25 years and its finish can be renewed without demolition. A galvanized steel panel structure also has a long structural life, but the liner itself is consumable and is replaced every 8–12 years. A fibreglass shell lasts well when installed correctly, though the gelcoat fades and eventually needs refinishing.
Which type is easiest to repair?
Concrete, by a wide margin: any section can be opened, repaired, and refinished locally. Liners are easy to replace wholesale but patches show. Fibreglass is hardest — crack repair needs laminate and gelcoat work with difficult colour matching, and any defect in the bedding under the shell is effectively unreachable.
