Pool Renovation in Egypt — Retiling, Waterproofing, Equipment and Covers

Most pools reach a point where routine maintenance is no longer enough: tiles start to come away, water disappears faster than it evaporates, or the plant room is a generation behind. A good renovation starts by finding the cause, not by covering the symptom. This guide explains the signs, the main renovation works, pool covers, and what drives the cost — without price lists, because every pool’s condition is different.

    Signs a pool needs renovation

    • Tiles or mosaic that sound hollow when tapped, crack, or come away.
    • Missing or crumbling grout.
    • Water loss beyond normal evaporation, or damp patches and salt deposits around the pool or in the plant room.
    • Rust stains on the finish — a possible sign of corroding reinforcement.
    • Cracked or moving coping stones and deck.
    • Recurring algae despite correct chemistry — often a sign of poor circulation or dead zones.
    • Old, noisy or inefficient pumps, a filter that loses performance quickly, or lights that keep failing.
    • Suction outlets without modern anti-entrapment covers, or a deck that is slippery or too hot underfoot.

Start with an assessment, not a tile quotation

Renovation starts by finding out why the pool has deteriorated. A leak investigation checks the shell, the fittings and the pipework separately — pressure-testing the lines, dye-testing around fittings and lights, and measuring water loss — so that new tiles are not laid over a leak that is still there.

Draining a pool is a structural decision, not just a pump job. Where groundwater is high, an empty shell can be pushed upwards by the water around it, so the groundwater level is checked before the pool is emptied, and the shell, render and coping are inspected once it is.

    Retiling and mosaic

A lasting retile goes back to a sound base. Old tiles and loose render are removed, the substrate is repaired, and a waterproofing system is applied before the new finish. Pool tiles are fixed with adhesives and grouts made for permanent immersion — often epoxy grout, which resists chemicals and staining — with movement joints where the structure needs them.

Pool-grade ceramic and porcelain suit straight walls and floors; glass mosaic follows curves and gives the deepest colour; slip-resistant tiles belong on steps, benches and the deck. Edge tiles, the waterline band and the coping are chosen together so the pool reads as one finish.

Pool tile prices — what drives the cost

People often ask for a price per metre for pool tiles, but the tile itself is only one part of the cost of retiling. What moves the total is everything around it:

    • The area and shape of the pool — curves, steps and benches take more cutting, or mosaic instead of tiles.
    • The finish chosen — pool-grade ceramic, porcelain or glass mosaic — and its origin.
    • Removing the old finish, and the condition of the base underneath.
    • The waterproofing system applied before tiling.
    • Adhesive and grout type — standard cementitious or epoxy.
    • Patterns, borders or motifs in the design.
    • Coping, edge tiles and the surrounding deck.
    • Access to the pool, removal of debris, and protection of the garden.

A complete quotation names each of these as its own line, so you can compare offers on the same scope. Our guide to what drives pool cost explains how to read a quotation.

    Renewing the waterproofing

Waterproofing is what the tiles depend on. A renovation renews it as a named system applied to a sound, prepared surface, with special detailing around every penetration — inlets, skimmers, lights and drains — and at joints and corners, where most leaks start. The pool is then filled and tested for watertightness before any tile is laid.

    Upgrading the equipment

A renovation is the right moment to bring the plant room up to date. Correctly sized, efficient pumps reduce running cost and noise; sand filters and multiport valves are replaced or have their media renewed; LED lights replace older lamps; skimmers, inlets and fittings are renewed; drain covers are upgraded to anti-entrapment types; and automatic dosing or heating can be added while the pool is empty.

Our sister company Waterstar manufactures pumps, sand filters, multiport valves, LED lights, skimmers and fittings in Badr City, and every component is available as a spare part.

    Pool covers

If you are comparing pool cover companies, first decide what the cover must do — keep children out, keep heat in, keep debris out, or extend the season — because each job needs a different cover:

    • Safety covers — tensioned or rigid covers anchored to the deck and rated to carry weight; the only type that is a safety measure.
    • Automatic slatted covers — slats that roll out over the water from a box or pit at one end; they need a recess, power, and an edge detail planned with the pool.
    • Thermal and bubble covers — reduce evaporation and heat loss and keep dust out, but are not safety covers.
    • Enclosures — fixed or telescopic structures over the pool that extend the season; they are structures in their own right, with wind loads and foundations.
    • Debris and winter covers — keep leaves and sand out of a pool that is closed for the season.

Questions worth asking any cover supplier: is it certified as a safety cover, how and where is it anchored, does it suit your edge (overflow or skimmer), how does it behave in wind, and who services it. When we plan a renovation we allow for the cover you intend to use — its fixings, the coping detail, and the recess and power an automatic cover needs.

    How a renovation runs

How long a renovation takes depends on what the assessment finds, so the quotation sets out the phases rather than a single date:

    • Assessment and leak investigation.
    • Scope of works and itemised quotation.
    • Groundwater check and controlled draining.
    • Removal of the old finish and repair of the base and structure.
    • Waterproofing and a watertightness test.
    • Tiling, coping and deck.
    • Equipment, lighting and covers.
    • Filling, water balancing, commissioning and handover.

    Pool renovation by Fox Pools

Fox Pools has worked on swimming pools in Egypt since 1993 — building concrete and prefabricated pools, and renovating and maintaining existing ones. A renovated concrete pool is assessed, scoped and rebuilt with the same engineering approach as a new one, and the equipment we install comes from our sister company Waterstar, so spare parts stay available.

For routine care once the work is done, see our guide to pool maintenance in Egypt.

    Pool renovation FAQs

When does a pool need renovation rather than repair?

When the problem is widespread rather than local — tiles failing across large areas, waterproofing that no longer holds, repeated leaks, or a plant room at the end of its life. A single loose tile or a failed light is a repair; a pattern of failures calls for an assessment.

What determines pool tile prices for a retile?

The tile is only part of the cost. Removing the old finish, repairing the base, the waterproofing system, the adhesive and grout, the shape of the pool, the coping and deck, and access all change the total. A quotation that itemises each of these lets you compare offers properly.

Can a pool be retiled without draining it?

Not for a full retile. Small underwater repairs are possible with special products, but a proper retile needs the pool drained — after checking the groundwater level — so the base can be repaired and waterproofed.

What should I ask a pool cover company?

Whether the cover is certified as a safety cover, how it is anchored, whether it suits your pool edge, how it performs in wind, and who services it. A thermal or bubble cover saves heat and water but is not a safety cover.

Is it worth upgrading the equipment during a renovation?

Usually, yes. The pool is empty and the pipework is accessible, so replacing pumps, filters, lights, fittings and drain covers now causes less disruption than doing it later, and efficient, correctly sized equipment lowers running costs.

Is your pool due for renovation?

Send us photos and a short description of what you are seeing. An engineer will arrange an assessment and prepare a renovation scope and quotation itemised line by line.
