Kids Swimming Pools in Egypt — Safe Design and Construction

A kids swimming pool is not a smaller copy of the main pool. Depth, edges, drains, filtration and sightlines all change when the swimmers are children. This guide explains what a safe children's pool needs in a villa, a compound or a hotel — from the depth profile and safety barriers to splash areas, heating and a filtration circuit sized for a small volume of water.

Separate kids pool, shallow zone or sun shelf?

There are three common ways to give children their own water. A separate children's pool is a small, shallow basin of its own, usually beside the main pool. A shallow zone is part of the main pool, separated from the deeper water by a step, a low wall or a rope line. A sun shelf — a wide, shallow ledge at the pool entry — gives toddlers a place to sit and splash while adults stay close.

A separate pool is the safest arrangement for younger children and the usual choice in compounds and hotels, because it has its own depth, its own entry and its own filtration. A shallow zone suits villas where space is limited and the children are a little older. The right answer depends on the ages of the children, how many use the water at once, and who supervises them.

    Depths for each age group

Depth is the first safety decision. A toddler or paddling pool is measured in centimetres — typically around 40 cm and rarely deeper than 60 cm. A pool for older children who are learning to swim can be deeper, but it should stay below chest height for the youngest swimmer expected to use it.

The floor should be flat or very gently graded, with no sudden drop. Where a shallow zone meets deeper water the change must be obvious — a step, a contrasting tile line, a rope line or a low wall — and depth markings should be visible on the coping and the deck.

    • Keep the depth constant across the children's area so there are no surprises underfoot.
    • Use wide, full-width entry steps rather than a ladder.
    • Round off underwater corners and avoid recesses where a child's arm or leg could get caught.
    • Mark depths in large figures on the coping and on the deck.

Safety features every kids pool needs

No single feature makes a pool safe for children. Safety comes from layers that work together — and adult supervision is the layer that is never optional.

    • Fencing — a barrier around the pool area at least 1.2 m high with no footholds to climb, and a self-closing, self-latching gate that opens away from the water, in line with international pool-safety guidance such as the US CPSC barrier guidelines.
    • Covers — a safety cover rated to carry weight closes the pool when it is not in use. A thermal or bubble cover keeps heat in but is not a safety cover: a child can slip underneath it.
    • Anti-entrapment drain covers — certified anti-entrapment covers on every suction outlet, with suction shared between two drains or taken through an unblockable drain, so a child's body or hair cannot be held against an outlet. An emergency pump stop near the pool adds a further layer.
    • Non-slip edges — slip-resistant tiles on the deck, the steps and the floor of the shallow area, and rounded coping without sharp edges.
    • Shallow ledges and steps — a sun shelf or wide steps give small children somewhere to sit at a depth where they can stand.
    • Clear sightlines — the whole children's area should be visible from where adults sit, with underwater and deck lighting for evening use.
    • Signage and rescue equipment — depth markings, pool rules, and a reaching pole or ring buoy close at hand, especially in compounds and hotels.

    Splash areas and water play

A splash pad — ground-level jets, sprays and tipping buckets on a non-slip surface with no standing water — lets very young children play with water at no depth at all. The water drains into a collection tank and passes through filtration and disinfection before it is sprayed again, so a splash pad needs its own tank and treatment, not just a pump.

Inside a shallow pool, gentle fountains, spray arches and mushroom features add play value. Slides are installed only where the receiving depth and run-out match the manufacturer's requirements. Every feature must be easy to clean and free of gaps that could trap small fingers.

    Heating a children's pool

Children feel cold sooner than adults, and a small, shallow pool loses heat quickly at night and through evaporation. A small volume also warms up quickly, so heating a separate kids pool is often practical even when heating the main pool is not.

The heater — often a heat pump — is sized to the water volume, the months you want to use the pool, and whether there is a cover. A cover at night makes the biggest difference to how hard the heater works. Keeping the children's pool on its own circuit also means you can heat it without heating the whole pool.

Separate filtration for a small volume of water

A children's pool holds little water but carries a heavy load: many small bathers, sunscreen, and the occasional accident. International guidance therefore sets much shorter turnover periods for shallow children's water than for a main pool — typically an hour or less for the whole volume to pass through the filter, against several hours for a main pool.

That is why a kids pool should have its own circulation: its own pump, filter, inlets and disinfection dosing, sized to its own volume rather than borrowed from the main pool. A separate circuit also means the children's pool can be closed, treated and refilled after a contamination incident without shutting the main pool.

The pumps, sand filters, multiport valves, LED lights, skimmers and fittings we install are made by our sister company Waterstar in Badr City, and every component is available as a spare part — which matters for equipment that runs long hours.

Kids pools in villas, compounds and hotels

    Villas

Most villa owners choose a shallow zone or sun shelf inside the main pool, or a small separate pool beside the family seating area. Plan the fence and gate at design stage so they suit the garden rather than being added later. See our guide to home swimming pools.

    Compounds and clubhouses

A separate children's pool with its own entry, fence and filtration, placed within sight of the main pool and the attendant's position. Shade matters: in Egypt's summer sun, a children's area without shade is unusable at midday.

    Hotels and resorts

A children's pool and splash area close to the family facilities and away from the adults' quiet zone, with the high bather load planned into the filtration and slip-resistant surfaces throughout.

How Fox Pools designs and builds a kids pool

Fox Pools has designed and built swimming pools in Egypt since 1993, in concrete and as prefabricated systems. A children's pool follows the same engineering path as any pool we build: survey, design of the depth profile and the safety layers, structural design, waterproofing, circulation sized to the actual volume, finishes chosen for grip, and commissioning. Our concrete pools carry a structural warranty of up to 10 years.

Compound and hotel rules for children's pools vary, and obtaining the operator's or authority's approval is the owner's responsibility; the design drawings are what that submission is based on. To plan the whole layout, read our swimming pool design guide.

    Kids swimming pool FAQs

What is the right depth for a kids swimming pool?

For toddlers, a paddling depth of around 40 cm is typical, and wading pools rarely go beyond 60 cm. Pools for older children can be deeper but should stay below chest height for the youngest expected swimmer, with a flat floor and clearly marked depth changes.

Does a kids pool need its own filtration?

Ideally, yes. A small volume used by many young bathers needs a much faster turnover than a main pool. A separate pump, filter and dosing circuit sized to the children's pool keeps the water safe and lets you treat it without shutting the main pool.

What safety features does a children's pool need?

A barrier at least 1.2 m high with a self-closing, self-latching gate, a weight-bearing safety cover, certified anti-entrapment drain covers, non-slip edges and steps, clear sightlines from adult seating, and depth markings — together with constant adult supervision.

Is a pool cover enough to keep children safe?

No. A rated safety cover is one layer, and thermal or bubble covers are not safety covers at all. Fencing, a self-latching gate, safe drains and supervision are all still needed.

Can a shallow children's area be added to an existing pool?

Sometimes. Options include raising part of the floor or building a ledge inside the pool, or adding a separate small pool beside it. Each needs a structural check, waterproofing and new finishes, and is assessed at survey. See our guide to pool renovation.

Should a kids pool be heated?

It is often worth it. Children get cold quickly and a small pool loses heat fast, but a small volume also heats quickly. A heat pump sized to the volume, used with a night cover, is the usual approach.
